Question: Sir I have one question.. Why do we snore and how to avoid snoring in the night?
Answer: Snoring happens when the palate, uvula, tongue, tonsils and also the smooth muscles in the back of the throat rub against each other and generate a vibrating sound while asleep.
The reason being the soft palate and uvula (bell) partially blocked airways while sleeping. When you block the environment flow causing an inhibition with the easy and normal breathing while sleeping. It is when snoring occurs.
An excess of mucus collecting in the throat muscles can also cause congestion. In Ayurveda, this is seen as a Kapha aggravation. Obesity, stress, imbalanced diet, allergies, the circulatory problem, certain types of medicines, Alcohol, smoking and hereditary also cause snoring.
There are many snoring remedies. Here I recommend those which are simple and can be followed easily.
Avoid foods which increase Kapha. i.e. Milk, yoghurt, bananas, ice cream, cold drinks, orange and pastries.
Take the mint, Tulsi, sage and ginger tea.
A cup of hot water taken in the morning and before bed is also very helpful.
Taking 3 to 5 black peppers in the morning and before bed will be more helpful.
Don't lie on your back as it increases the chances of your tongue falling back. Lie sideways.
Increase your pillow height by 4-5 inches as it eases breathing and prevents the tongue from rolling back.
Avoid smoking since it leads to swelling and blockage of airways.
Avoid alcohol since it causes the muscles to relax.
Yoga to treat snoring:
Neck exercises and tortoise breathing.

Alom Vilom, Brahmari, Ujjayi and Kapalbhati pranayam.
Trikonasana, Tadasana,Pawanmukta asana, Bhujang asana, Shalabhasana, Uttanpadasana, Sarp asana and Vajrasana.
